The Apostle Paul served the Lord with great determination in spite of attempts against his life, severe trials and health problems.
The Apostle Paul’s unwavering resolve was…
“But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” Acts 20:24, NKJV.
The reason Paul was “not moved” was, he “did not count his life dear“. He was ready and willing to die for the cause of Christ. Paul was “running a race”. And he was determined to finish that race, and not only to finish it but to “finish it with joy“. The only way you can finish your race with joy is to keep your eyes on Jesus and let nothing distract or deter you from the finish line. This was indeed Paul’s attitude. Paul was also very aware that he was running no ordinary race. The obstacle course he found himself on was the noble ambition to “testify (to everyone) the gospel of the Grace of God“. Now that is a cause worth running for!
Paul is an example to us all. Let us run our race with diligence and patience. May our character, reputation and service bring glory to the Lord.
Hebrews 12:1-2 (HCSB) Therefore… let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.
Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find true life.” Luke 9:23, 24, NLT.
Lord give me that godly character to sustain me in my race!
