In today’s text we take a close look at the gift of speaking in tongues. On the day of Pentecost 120 of Christ’s disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues.

Many today are confused about this spiritual gift.

What is speaking in tongues?   Is it for today?

Should I seek this gift?   Should I avoid this gift?

In today’s message we will explore these and other questions…

Here are some answers… Q. What is speaking in tongues? A. One of the many manifestations of the Holy Spirit in a Spirit filled believer’s life. “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one… (a list) to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.” 1 Corinthians 12:7-10 Q. What is the purpose of the gift of tongues? A. Prayer and worship to God “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is     unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” 1 Corinthians 14:14-15 Q. Is the gift of tongues for today? A. Paul said we should not lack any spiritual gift until Christ’s return. “…so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ,” 1 Corinthians 1:7 Q. Should I seek this gift? A. We should seek the way of love along with every spiritual gift. “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.” 1 Corinthians 14:1

We should always seek God’s best for our lives. But above all things we should seek the giver of good gifts, Jesus Christ.

We had a saying in the Jesus movement of the 70’s,

Seek the giver not the gift“.
