So many religious people are so confused about what it takes to be a Christian that they wouldn’t be able to simply and accurately answer the direct question, “What must I do to be saved?”
In today’s text (Acts 16:19-40) the Apostle Paul is asked this very question and his answer was short and simple. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved!” Is this your religion? If the spiritual leaders of your church have a different answer from this, then they have a different Gospel. The true gospel of Jesus Christ is that we are freely saved by God’s grace simply through faith.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…” Romans 1:16a
The Apostle Paul explained it to the church of Ephesus this way…
“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,” Ephesians 1:13
Why then are so many people confused about this? I believe it is because rather than reading the Bible for themselves they are listening to so called religious leaders who are deceiving and being deceived. What is the antidote to this malady? Read the Bible for yourself. Read it regularly and earnestly. It is God’s word to you!
“For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13
