When you get right down to it, what gets you into heaven? What saves a person from their sins and gives them eternal life? The answer, of course, is not a “what” but a “Who”. Some would erroneously think the “who” is “you”. But nothing would be further from the truth. In today’s text, the Apostle Paul continues his argument for justification through faith. The grace of God brings us the Word of God. And when we believe God’s word we are freely justified before God by His grace.
Consider the following verses as examples of this.
“just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Galatians 3:6
“Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness,” Romans 4:4-5
“that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” Romans 10:9-11
“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,” Ephesians 1:13
Some wrestle to find the balance between faith and works. But there is no balance. We are saved by the grace of God through faith. And then, after that, we do good works because we are saved.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10, NKJV
Thank God for His free gift of grace!
